Als Widad gerade einmal 13 Jahre alt war, floh sie mit ihrer Familie unter Beschuss aus ihrer Heimatstadt Sinuni (einem Unterbezirk von Sindschar) und schloss sich Tausenden von Jesidinnen und Jesiden an, die während des Völkermords 2014 aus ihren Häusern vertrieben worden waren. Sie flohen fast ohne Hab und Gut und fanden zunächst Zuflucht im Haus ihres Onkels, wo das wenige Geld, das sie hatten, nach etwa einem Monat aufgebraucht war. Sie erinnert sich, dass sie weggeworfene Kleidung sammelte – alles, was die Nachbarn nicht mehr wollten, sogar Dinge, die weggeworfen worden waren –, nur um über die Runden zu kommen. Schließlich zog die Familie in eine kleine Stadt namens Tigran in Sulaymaniyah, wo sie etwa drei Jahre lang blieb.
